An impressive and highly decorative vintage Burmese Kalaga tapestry purchased in Brunei during the 1980s and featuring traditional hand-applied embellishments including gold thread embroidery, sequins, beadwork and appliqué detailing.

The tapestry depicts a richly detailed ceremonial scene centred around figures riding an elephant surrounded by dancers and ornate decorative borders. Set against a black velvet-style ground, the intricate metallic embroidery and sequined decoration create a striking visual effect that catches the light beautifully.

Kalaga tapestries are among Burma's most distinctive textile arts, traditionally created using layers of appliqué, metallic thread, sequins and embroidery to depict scenes from mythology, court life and religious stories.
