Late 19th-Century Chinese Ningbo Fir Cabinet
Dating from the late 19th century, this striking Chinese cabinet originates from the Ningbo region and is constructed in fir. The original dealer's label remains with the piece, identifying its age, region and timber, with an original retail price of £1,600.
Finished in a rich red lacquer, the cabinet features traditional double doors with a large circular decorative metal plate and ornate brass-toned fittings giving it a distinctive character.
The doors open to reveal a contrasting dark interior with generous storage including shelving and two useful internal drawers. The combination of the warm red exterior, aged metalwork and dark interior gives the piece a particularly atmospheric appearance.
A substantial and highly decorative piece of furniture that would work beautifully as a statement storage cabinet in a living room, dining room, hallway or bedroom. Its strong proportions and colour would also sit particularly well within a more contemporary interior, where the contrast between antique Chinese furniture and modern furnishings can be very effective.
As an antique piece, it shows age-related wear, marks and variations to the finish which form part of its character and history.
